Business & Tips

Today I’m sharing Family Photo Outfit tips for fall and winter. Fall is a magical time of year, and it’s perfect for capturing those precious family moments. The vibrant colors, cozy vibes, and cool weather create an ideal backdrop for your family photos.

But as you prepare for your session, one question often arises: What should we wear? Choosing the right outfits can make a significant difference in the overall look and feel of your portraits. Here’s a guide with my best tips that I’ve collected over the years to help you dress your best for your fall family session.

1. Embrace the Fall Color Palette

When it comes to fall, I think of warm, earthy tones that complement the season. Colors like deep reds, burnt oranges, mustard yellows, and rich browns are perfect for this time of year. These shades not only stand out against the autumn scenery but also bring a sense of warmth and togetherness to your photos. Consider mixing in some neutral tones like cream, beige, or gray to balance the bolder hues.

2. Coordinate, Don’t Match

While it’s tempting to have everyone in the same outfit, coordinating colors and patterns is a better approach. Choose a color scheme that works well together, and let each family member express their style within that palette. For example, one person might wear a plaid shirt with similar colors, while another wears a solid sweater. This method keeps the focus on your family and not the outfits.

Here’s a great example of coordinating outfits that still match but not everyone is in the same shade or style of clothing.

3. Dress for the Weather

Fall weather can vary a lot in Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. area, so check the forecast as your session approaches. Make sure everyone is dressed appropriately for the temperature, whether that means layering up for a chilly day or keeping it light if it’s warmer than expected. I have had chilly October sessions and sweltering ones. It’s just a roll of the dice with the weather!

4. Consider the Location

The location of your session can definitely influences your outfit choices. If your shoot is in a park with lots of colorful leaves, go for colors that will pop against the scenery and not blend in. If shooting at D.C. Monuments, be careful with neutrals and whites as all the columns are white/cream ish – you don’t want to blend in!

If you’re at a Christmas tree farm, while it is temping to wear green for Christmas photos, red pops a lot better. If you’re looking for a tree farm session, I still have a few slots available for my November mini session day. See the details here!

5. Footwear Matters

Shoes often get overlooked, but they can make or break your outfit. Choose footwear that complements your outfit and is practical for the location. Boots are always a great choice for fall, adding both style and warmth. Make sure they’re clean and comfortable since you’ll be on your feet during the session.

6. Be Careful with Patterns

Patterns can add interest to your photos, but use them sparingly. Stick to one or two patterned pieces and balance them with solid colors. Plaid, florals, and subtle stripes work beautifully in fall photos. Just be careful not to mix too many patterns, as it can become distracting or look “cluttered.”

7. Accessorize Thoughtfully

Accessories can enhance your outfits, but they should be used thoughtfully. Hats, scarves, and jewelry can add a personal touch, but avoid anything too flashy that might draw attention away from the main focus—you and your family. Furthermore, if you have very young children, I suggest skipping most accessories so it’s one less thing to adjust as we are taking photos. Simple, coordinated accessories can tie the whole look together.

8. Comfort is Key

Above all, make sure everyone feels comfortable in what they’re wearing. If someone is fidgeting with their clothes or shoes, it will show in the photos. Choose outfits that fit well, aren’t too tight, and allow for easy movement. The last thing anyone wants is a cranky toddler or husband because their outfit is too tight – trust me!

9. Plan Ahead

Please don’t wait until the last minute to decide on outfits! The best way to avoid this is by planning your photo session with plenty of time first. The families who are most prepared are booking their fall sessions in August. I know it might seem early, but fall dates go quickly, especially in Northern Virginia! Plan ahead so you have time to shop, try on, and make any necessary exchanges or returns.

Final Thoughts

I hope these fall family photo outfit tips help you! Choosing the perfect outfits for your fall family session doesn’t have to be stressful. By following these tips, you’ll be well on your way to creating beautiful, timeless portraits that you’ll cherish for years to come. Remember, the best outfits are the ones that make you feel confident, comfortable, and most importantly, reflect your family’s unique style. Need more inspiration?
