Fall is the most popular season for family photos in Northern Virginia – and it’s easy to see why! The warm colors, golden light, and cozy outfits come together to create timeless, beautiful portraits. But if you want to make the most of the season, knowing when to book (and why) is key.
If fall photos are on your wish list, it’s best to book by early September at the latest. My calendar fills quickly – especially for October and early November dates. These are prime weekends for fall foliage, and I often start booking them in late summer. The earlier you reach out, the more options you’ll have for ideal dates and times.

In Northern Virginia, fall color usually peaks between the second and fourth week of October. It can vary slightly depending on location and weather, but this is when you’ll see the most beautiful reds, oranges, and golds. If you’re hoping for that rich, colorful backdrop, I recommend aiming for a mid-to-late October session.

A few years, the leaves will last past Halloween, but my general rule of thumb is after Halloween = the leaves have likely fallen. A lot of times we get a good rain around Halloween that takes most the pretty leaves down.
Fall is also the most common time for mini sessions. These are quick and convenient, usually around 15–20 minutes, and perfect if you want a few updated family shots. However, they can feel rushed—especially with little kids or if someone needs time to warm up to the camera.

Full sessions, on the other hand, offer more time, flexibility, and variety. You get to slow down, enjoy the experience, and receive a more complete gallery of images. They’re ideal for families who want a relaxed, natural session that tells more of your story.
I know once school starts, everyone gets busy. I always recommend booking before school starts or right after so you have one less thing on your plate with the busy season of school activities and holidays ahead. Whether you’re leaning toward a mini or full session, reach out early to claim your spot. It’s never too soon to plan ahead—and your future self will thank you when everything’s already in place!
