3 Things to Avoid in Your Photo Session (and what to do instead)
6 Questions to Ask your Newborn Photography

One of the most common questions I hear from expecting families is when to book maternity & newborn photos. It sounds like something you can figure out later — after the nursery is set up, after the shower, after things settle down a bit.
But here’s what I’ve seen in ten years of photographing growing families as a Northern Virginia maternity photographer: the families who plan ahead don’t just get better photos. They get a better experience. And the families who wait? They often don’t get the photos at all.
I’m sharing this not to create pressure, but because I genuinely wish someone had told me this when I was pregnant with my first child. I have almost no photos from that pregnancy. My body was changing so fast, I didn’t feel my best, and I kept putting it off. Now, years later, I’d give anything to have those images — a reminder of that quiet, anticipatory season before everything changed.
So let’s talk about timing.
If you want both maternity and newborn photos, it’s a good idea to reach out in your second trimester. That gives us plenty of time to plan, connect, and make sure everything feels right, and plan the maternity session before your due date arrives.
If you’re only interested in newborn photos, early in your third trimester is a good time to get in touch. As an Alexandria newborn photographer, I serve families throughout the greater NoVA area — and my calendar fills up faster than most people expect, especially in peak seasons.

For maternity sessions specifically, the sweet spot is 28–32 weeks. Your bump is beautifully round and visible, but you’re still feeling comfortable and mobile. After 32 weeks, most mamas are tired, and rightfully so — your body is working hard. The last thing you need is to stress about a photo session when you should be resting.
For newborn sessions, aim for within the first three weeks of life. Babies change so quickly in those early days, and the sleepy, curly, fresh-from-the-womb stage doesn’t last long. Whether you prefer an in-home lifestyle session or a studio session, sooner is always better.
As a Northern Virginia newborn photographer, I receive last-minute requests fairly often, and I genuinely wish I could say yes to all of them. But the truth is, I can’t always accommodate them — and when I can, something has to give.
To protect the quality and care I give every client, I don’t take on extra bookings at the last minute that would put me behind on editing. During peak seasons like fall, I stop taking last-minute requests entirely. It’s not personal — it’s about making sure every family I’ve committed to receives my full attention.
The most common outcome? The newborn window passes. The maternity stage is gone. And a season that deserved to be documented simply wasn’t.
Here’s something that surprises a lot of clients: booking early doesn’t just secure your spot. It gives us time to actually prepare together.
Families who book early have time to think through details that really shape the session — whether they want to include a pet, whether grandparents will be there for part of it, what they want to wear. We can work through wardrobe together, talk through location ideas, and make sure you arrive feeling calm and ready.

Last-minute bookings are a completely different experience — not because the photos can’t be beautiful, but because everything feels rushed. There’s less time to prepare, less flexibility in scheduling, and more pressure on an already full season of life.
The families who plan ahead consistently walk away with photos they love — and a process that felt easy. That’s exactly what I want for you.
I know this is the part where some of you will keep scrolling. Body changes during pregnancy are real, and feeling camera-ready is probably the last thing on your mind.
But I want to gently say this: these changes are temporary. Your body will feel like your own again. And once this season passes — once your baby is here and growing and you’re deep in a different kind of beautiful chaos — you may find yourself wishing you had a record of those quiet months when it was just you and that little one, anticipating each other.

One of the things I love most about my work as a Northern Virginia maternity photographer is getting to hold space for that season. It’s fleeting, it’s powerful, and it deserves to be remembered. I can’t give that time back. But photos can hold it for you.
If you’re still wondering when to book maternity & newborn photos, my answer is always the same: sooner than you think. Reach out in your second trimester if you can, and we’ll figure out the rest together.
I serve expecting and growing families throughout Northern Virginia, Alexandria, and the greater Washington D.C. area. I’d love to hear from you.
