Some sessions stay with you long after the gallery goes out. This is one of them. It was a studio newborn session for baby Grant, the second son of a dual-military family. What a Session With Me Looks Like
Before every session, clients fill out a short questionnaire. This tells me their color preferences ahead of time. Then, I set out wraps, layers, and props that fit their taste and their nursery or home decor for them to choose from.
I also have dress options from my client closet, so mom has something beautiful to wear. That way, she doesn’t need to shop for it herself. For her session, Grant’s mom chose one of these beautiful dresses for the family portraits.
First, we always capture family images. Once dad and big brother have their moments with the baby, they’re free to head home. In Grant’s case, they did.
After that, I settle into quiet, focused time with just baby. That’s when I get the simple, timeless shots: baby alone in soft wraps, on clean backdrops, with all the tiny details that disappear so fast.
Letting the Big Brother Lead
Older siblings can make or break a newborn session. That’s why I always tell parents this: I’d rather work with your child’s mood than against it. During Grant’s session, his big brother was wonderfully cooperative. Even so, the real key was following his lead, not mine.
That day, he wanted to kiss his baby brother. So, that’s exactly what we leaned into. Meanwhile, if a child resists a pose or seems uncomfortable, we simply move on. After all, there’s no forcing a kid to do anything they don’t want to do. Honestly, those unscripted moments usually end up as everyone’s favorites anyway.
A Photo Worth Recreating
Grant’s parents came to me with one image already in mind. It meant everything to them. Years earlier, their firstborn was tucked into an Army helmet with a boot from either parent on either side. This family was built around service. Both parents wear the uniform, so I love what that image represents.
Why These Days Matter So Much
Newborn photography isn’t always top of mind for new parents. There’s a lot going on in those first weeks, after all. Still, these days move faster than anyone expects. In fact, by the time Grant’s mom received her gallery, she was already in disbelief at how much he’d grown.
As a mother myself, this is exactly why I do this work. Looking back, I wish I had more photos of my own kids interacting at these tiny ages. Honestly, I also wish I had more of myself in the frame with them. Too often, I was the one behind the camera instead. That’s part of why family portraits always come first in my sessions. In the end, these photos aren’t just about the baby. They’re about the whole family, together, in a moment that will never happen again.
