3 Things to Avoid in Your Photo Session (and what to do instead)
5 Ways to Enjoy Your Family Photos Off Screen

How to Prepare for a Family Photo Session
Choosing Christmas family photo outfits can feel like one more thing to figure out during an already busy holiday season. Between coordinating colors, keeping kids comfortable, and finding something everyone feels good in, it’s easy to overthink it.
The good news? Your family doesn’t need matching outfits or an entirely new wardrobe to look beautiful in photos. A little planning, a thoughtful color palette, and clothing that feels like you are usually all it takes.
Whether you’re joining me for Christmas mini sessions in the studio or heading outdoors for holiday photos, these simple tips will help you pull everything together with confidence.
The easiest way to create a cohesive look is to choose a color palette rather than matching everyone’s outfit.
For Christmas family photos, I love palettes that feel festive without being overly themed:
Warm neutrals with soft greens and muted reds
Cream, camel, and deep evergreen
Burgundy, navy, and ivory
Classic Christmas reds paired with denim and warm neutrals

Start with one outfit you love, then build the rest of the family’s clothing around it. Maybe that’s mom’s dress, a favorite sweater, or your daughter’s adorable holiday outfit. From there, mix coordinating colors, subtle patterns, and different textures. The goal is for everyone to look connected without appearing like they purchased the same outfit in four different sizes.
Coordinating feels more natural, timeless, and visually interesting than matching from head to toe.
The best family photos happen when children can move, play, cuddle, and be themselves. Their outfits should make that easy.
When choosing clothing for your little ones, consider:
Soft fabrics without scratchy tags or uncomfortable seams
Shoes they’ve worn before
Clothing that fits well and allows movement
Layers that can be removed if needed
Outfits that reflect their personalities

If you’re purchasing something new, let your child wear it around the house beforehand. A photo session is not the ideal time to discover that a sweater is itchy or those adorable shoes hurt.
And remember, a little personality is a good thing. Your child doesn’t need to look perfectly polished every second to create beautiful photographs.
My biggest advice for parents is simple: wear something you feel comfortable and confident in.
You don’t need to squeeze into an outfit that makes you uncomfortable just because it looks good on a Pinterest board. When you feel good in what you’re wearing, that confidence shows up in your photographs.

A few things to keep in mind:
Choose clothing that fits comfortably and allows you to move
Consider soft neutrals or rich seasonal colors that complement the kids
Avoid logos or distracting graphics
Select silhouettes that make you feel like yourself, just a little more polished
And don’t feel like both parents need to dress identically. One person might wear a dress while the other wears chinos and a sweater. What matters is that the overall color palette feels intentional.
You don’t need to follow a long list of rules, but a few choices can make styling easier.
Above all, don’t stress about getting every detail perfect. Your family connection matters much more than whether every outfit coordinates flawlessly.
Whether you’re joining me in the studio for cozy holiday portraits or stepping into a festive outdoor setting, I want your experience to feel simple and enjoyable from start to finish.
I offer styling guidance to help you pull together outfits that complement your family, your chosen backdrop, and the overall look you’re hoping to create. If you’re unsure about a color combination or debating between two outfits, I’m always happy to help you work through it. You don’t have to figure it all out alone.

My Christmas mini sessions are designed to give busy families beautiful, meaningful holiday photographs without adding unnecessary stress to an already full season. Come as you are, dress in a way that feels like your family, and let me take care of the rest.
The earlier you begin, the more flexibility you’ll have to find pieces you love, order different sizes, and make exchanges if needed.
But remember, Christmas family photo outfits don’t need to be expensive or elaborate. A thoughtful color palette, comfortable clothing, and a little bit of personality will always photograph beautifully.
The most important thing you’ll bring to your session isn’t the perfect outfit – it’s your family. And I can’t wait to capture that!
