I specialize one type of photography that is so near and dear to my heart and that is being a Charlottesville Newborn Photographer. I got into newborn photography ultimately because I became a mom. My business started because I spent the first year of my first daughter’s life capturing her. In 2014, I got my first camera to document her – not to start a business! I sometimes say I started this business on accident. But I know that it was God’s plan for me.
I have a passion for documenting little people because at the time I was starting my business, I was in the thick of taking care of my own babies too. Connecting with other new moms in this way is one way I could support other moms and give back. I often felt so lonely in those first days of motherhood and have very few flattering pictures to boot.
I started with a few newborn sessions that I will probably never put on the internet. They’re so so bad. And most new moms who think “oh it looks pretty easy” and tries to take their own newborn photos will agree with me on that one! It’s so much harder than it looks!
I took an in-person newborn workshop with Amy McDaniels, a well-known and very talented newborn photographer based in Alabama. It was the single most useful thing I could have done for taking off in newborn photography. So if you’re a photographer and wondering how to grow, find a workshop! They’re worth it!
Here are my five top favorite posed newborn photos. I also offer lifestyle/in-home newborn sessions, but those are not posed and a very different style. Maybe one day I’ll round up my favorite lifestyle newborn images too.
Taken in March of 2019 when I was still in Hawaii, this session was very special to me because I didn’t think I’d even get to do it! I was about to move away from Hawaii and one of my good running friends/clients was due in April after I left. She had her baby 6 weeks early! Mira was healthy as can be though but also one of the tiniest babies I’d gotten to see in my studio at just about 5 pounds! It was like it was meant to be, me getting to do my friend’s session after all.
I don’t normally do posed newborn photography outside, but in 2020 last year I did this session outside to be a bit more safe for COVID measures. I love the contrast of a sweet new baby and the beauty of nature right around him.
From November of 2019, just in time for this sweetie to celebrate his first Christmas, I took this photo for one of my friends. You will never have to ask me twice if I want to do Christmas themed photos!
This one is cheating because it was at a client’s home for a newborn lifestyle session. But the baby’s dad suddenly had the idea to take out some of his military gear and place her on it. It turned into the most beautiful more traditional posed image. I just love this one. Having military kids myself, it really hit home with me.
This is one of my all-time favorite studio props, this little tiny cradle that actually rocks. I love using this on my custom made real wood backdrops for posed images of babies. I also love when babies have such amazing eye contact, even at just two weeks old!
Being a newborn photographer is so much more than taking photos. It’s calming days old babies, wrapping them up tight and in ways pleasing to the eye, assuring new and anxious mama that it’s all gonna be okay, making sure lighting is great, having a wide variety of props for parents to choose from to accent their new little babe. The list goes on.
While I know in my heart that I care deeply about all types of photography I offer, I get the most compliments on my patience and attention to detail for my work in Charlottesville Newborn Photography. It is not easy, but it’s very rewarding to gift families these timeless images.
